“Let us continue to pray for the suffering and battered Ukrainian people, asking God to free them from the scourge of war.  The only reasonable thing to do would be to stop and negotiate.  May wisdom inspire concrete steps toward peace.”

CAFOD’s Prayer for Ukraine

Loving God,
We pray for the people of Ukraine,
for all those suffering or afraid,
that you will be close to them and protect them.

We pray for world leaders,
for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices.

We pray for the world
that in this moment of crisis,
we may reach out in solidarity
to our brothers and sisters in need.

May we walk in your ways
so that peace and justice
become a reality for the people of Ukraine
and for all the world.

Amen.

Thought from Rick Warren:

faith

Wednesday 20 July 2022

Today we begin reading the prophet Jeremiah at weekday Mass.  Today’s passage recounts the call of Jeremiah.  It’s a beautiful passage.

Jeremiah 1: 4-10

The word of the Lord was addressed to me, saying,

‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;
before you came to birth I consecrated you;
I have appointed you as prophet to the nations.’

I said, ‘Ah, Lord; look, I do not know how to speak: I am a child!’

But the Lord replied,
‘Do not say, “I am a child.”
Go now to those to whom I send you
and, say whatever I command you.
Do not be afraid of them,
for I am with you to protect you –
it is the Lord who speaks!’

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me:

‘There! I am putting my words into your mouth.
Look, today I am setting you
over nations and over kingdoms,
to tear up and to knock down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.’

Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’

Matthew 11: 28-30

Thought for the Day

“I invite you to go out and look for those elderly persons who are most alone, at home or in residences where they are guests.  Let’s make sure no one feels alone.  Visiting the elderly who live alone is a work of mercy in our time!”

Pope Francis, Twitter, 13 July 2022

Tuesday 12 July 2022

Each month, Pope Francis has a particular intention for prayer which he shares with the world.  You can find this year’s intentions here:

ENG-HOLY-FATHERS-PRAYER-INTENTIONS-2022

For July, the Pope’s prayer intention is for the elderly.

We pray for the elderly, who represent the roots and memory of a people; may their experience and wisdom help young people to look towards the future with hope and responsibility.

Pope Francis launched this month’s prayer intention in this video:

“Every day God passes by and sows a seed in the soil of our lives. Making that seed grow depends on us, on our prayer, on the open heart with which we approach the Scriptures so that it might become for us the Living Word of God.”

Monday 4 July 2022

Someone sent me this picture today.  I don’t know how real or true it is, but it struck me as something rather beautiful.

Apparently, one tree was cut many years ago but the larger one has been holding onto it and feeding it ever since.  Whether it’s real or not, it wouldn’t surprise me – nature never ceases to amaze or humble me.  Nature has so much to teach humankind.

One tree holds another

Credit to whoever took the picture!
